DURBAN – Three people are dead after trying to steal fuel from a Transnet pipeline in Clairwood near Durban.

This resulted in a massive explosion, forcing residents in surrounding areas to seek refuge in a nearby football pitch.

Firefighters are trying to extinguish the fire to minimise the impact on the community and environment.

Transnet says the pipeline has been shut down.

The company says in the last two years, there’s been an unprecedented spate of fuel theft incidents on its pipelines.
